As people rely more and more on technology to solve problems, the ability if human to think for themselves will surely deteriorate.
It is true that technology nowadays has developed to such an extent that people are saved from doing those plodding work. However, saying that people’s thinking abilities are impaired due to the advancement of technology may prove to be overstate, since in most areas, people are still in the leading role regarding ideas and thinking abilities.
Indeed, in areas like algorithm calculating, technology has become so splendid that the basic works used to be done by men, such as arithmatic calculating, are completely supplanted by machines, and even very small ones work much better and faster than people. And thus, people’s abilities as calculating are declining for sure. Nonetheless, when it comes to further algorithm development and to invent more efficient formulas, people are still in the dominant place. It seems that technology has only taken those tedious works which do not contain much intelligent thinking. Therefore, it is safe to say that people’s ability to think for themselves are not deteriorating.
Moreover, in fields like commerce, technology cannot be put into think for people as things in this area are volatile, which needs rich experience and careful consideration. Take clothing business as an example, company leaders need to make decisions about their running strategy as how many cloths do they need to produce and what style is currently fashionable in order to make more profits. Those considerations are not something likely to be worked out by technological methods. The way computers are running to get results is actually based on large amount of data about past strategies and fashionable styles, and by processing those statistic, the computer can get a final result. However, the correct decisions for businesses are not entirely based on old data and experience, it requires more of analysis and observation, sometimes a bit of luck. Consequently, we cannot come to the conclusion that technology is deteriorating people’s thinking abilities.
Finally, in the most cutting edge area like artificial intellegence, it seems that technology can make predictions about future like weather, the results of matches and the conditions of traffic on a specific roads, and even to beat world chess champion, however, thoes achievements are all made by people. It is people who developed those models for machines to run, and the algorithms are also written by people and are improved over time just to ensure the machines are running more efficiently and faster. The notion that technology can take the place of people in thinking is absolutely ridiculous as these AI machines are far from perfect. Based on current reports, those machines still make constant mistakes when being used to play games or make predictions. Thus, on the contrary, people’s thinking abilities are actually improving as they are consistently working day and night to work out a better solution to solve those misbehaves by machine.
